1. London knife attack

A woman in her 60s was killed and at least five others were injured Wednesday night in a knife attack in Russell Square park in London. A 19-year-old man was arrested shortly after officers arrived at the scene. A Metropolitan Police official said the early indications "suggest that mental health is a significant factor in this case."

2. Non-union teachers face penalties due to industrial row

More than 1,000 teachers who do not belong to a trade union face losing allowances and salary increments worth thousands of euro because they work in schools staffed mainly by ASTI members, who are in dispute with the Government over pay.

3. Catholic bishops voice their support for Maynooth

Fourteen of the 26 Catholic diocesan bishops in Ireland have backed St Patrick's College despite the recent controversy at the college, indicating they will continue to send seminarians to Maynooth, with some saying they will also send trainee priests to the Irish College in Rome.
