Ireland remains level with Egypt after the first day of their Davis Cup BNP Paribas relegation play-off in Ciaro. The Irish team of Conor Niland and James McGee took a 1-0 lead in the first rubber where McGee faced Karim Maamoun.

McGee dropped the first set 6-2 but playing in 35 degrees picked up his game to win the following three sets 4-6, 2-6, 5-7 and take the match 3-1 in four hours.

Niland, however, dropped his first match to Sherif Sabry after going ahead in the opening set. Niland won that one 2-6 before Sabry snapped up the following three 6-1, 6-0, 6-2 and the match.

The teams are 1-1 before playing the reverse singles and doubles.
