Baghdad - A leading Iraqi newspaper yesterday said the delay in declaring the result of the US presidential election was orchestrated by the Jewish lobby which wanted the Democratic candidate, Vice-President Al Gore, to win rather than the Republican candidate, Mr George W. Bush.

Babel, the newspaper of President Saddam Hussein's eldest son, Uday, said the Jews in the US wanted Mr Gore to win in order to give more support to Israel in its clashes with the Palestinians.

"If they [Jews] succeed in making Gore win the election they will become the real leaders of America," Babel said in a front-page editorial.

The paper accused Mr Gore of being biased towards the Jews in the US and Israel, saying Mr Bush gave less importance to "co-operation with Zionist forces".
