Senior officers at Naas Garda station have begun an internal inquiry into how information from a member of the public about the location of a body was not acted upon.
A motorist driving from Dublin to Cork on Monday August 18th stopped to relieve himself by the roadside near Eadestown, between Naas and Blessington, when he saw what he thought were human or animal remains.
He continued on his way to Cork. When he reached his destination he telephoned Naas gardaí to report what he had seen. He told the officer that he was unsure if the remains were that of a person or an animal.
Three days later the man heard a radio appeal for anybody with information as to the whereabouts of missing Tallaght woman Ms Lynette McKeown to contact gardaí.
The Cork man rang Naas gardaí again and repeated the information he had given three days earlier. Gardaí then searched the area and found the remains of Ms McKeown.
A senior Garda source last night confirmed the matter was the subject of an internal inquiry.
