Inishbiggle, the Mayo island in the shadow of Achill, was put firmly on the map when Garda Peadar Howley was photographed carrying a ballot box to shore during the divorce referendum. In waders.

The island has no ferry, though it has a population of over 60, and so the garda tramped across at low tide.

Now Pol O Foighil, former councillor and member of Udaras na Gaeltachta, hopes to hold Fianna Fail to its election promise about better links. The Inishbiggle co-op recently secured planning permission for a cable car from Inishbiggle to Achill, which has a bridge to the mainland.

At a meeting yesterday, the members of the co-op pledged to pursue funding from the Minister of State with responsibility for the islands, Mr Eamon O Cuiv.

Late last month, Mayo County Council issued details of the permission for the cable car, to which certain conditions are attached.

These include provision of one male and one female toilet at each station - on Inishbiggle and at Achill's Bullsmouth - and the lodgement of a cash deposit or bond from an approved insurance company as security for the proper completion of the project.

In the interests of visual amenity and "orderly development", any structure must be dismantled and removed if the project ceases operation. Mr O Foighil is delighted that the project has been approved, after a long battle which went to An Bord Pleanala.

"It will be a tourist attraction. The island would be deserted if it didn't get it," he says.

The one final piece of paper now is the foreshore licence, which is being sought from the Department of the Marine.

Meanwhile Mr O Cuiv has approved a subsidy for the next year for passenger ferry services between the Aran Islands and Rossaveal.

The Minister of State said that both Inis Meain and Inis Oirr had been seeking a daily seven-day service for some time, and he was satisfied that this would now be provided.
