United Nations - Afghanistan's Taliban rulers and the opposition northern alliance have agreed in writing to indirect peace talks with the United Nations, a UN official announced yesterday. In separate letters to the United Nations, both sides consented to a "process of dialogue" aimed at "bringing about in the shortest possible time an end to the armed conflict in Afghanistan through political means," Mr Francesc Vendrell, the chief UN envoy for Afghanistan, told reporters.
