India said today that it had called off its six-month-old ceasefirein Kashmir and would invite Pakistan's military ruler Mr PervezMusharraf for talks.
In pursuance of the Lahore Declaration and the Shimla Agreement,Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has decided to invite GeneralPervez Musharraf, the chief executive of Pakistan, to visit India athis early convenience, Indian Defence Minister Jaswant Singh toldreporters.
A formal invite will be delivered shortly, he said after a meetingof the Cabinet Committee on Security.
Mr Singh said the unilateral suspension of hostilities againstmilitants which India launched in Kashmir last November had beenended as militant groups in the region had not cooperated and hadinflicted violence on the local population.
Non-initiation of combat operations is over. Security forces will actas they judge the situation best, Mr Singh said.
