Man acquitted in forgery trial

A man accused of possessing false driving licences, insurance certificates and motor taxation discs has been cleared of the charges by direction of Judge Tony Hunt at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

James Meleady of Ballybough Road, Fairview, had pleaded not guilty to possession of 16 forged documents at his home on February 27th, 2006.

The jury had heard that six "blank and false" Irish driving licences, a "false driving licence" in the name of another man, three "false motor tax discs" and six blank "fake FBD" insurance certificates had been found in Mr Meleady's residence.

However, Judge Hunt directed the jury to acquit Mr Meleady following an application by Seán Guerin, defending.

"Legally speaking, there is no case to answer," Judge Hunt said. "The evidence is not such that you could be satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt.

"The result is that I'm bound, whatever my personal views in the matter might be, to withdraw the case from you and direct you to return a verdict of not guilty'."
