Guantánamo prisoner to go back to Britain

LONDON- A man held at the US prison camp at Guantánamo Bay for more than four years, the last 12 months in solitary confinement with only a sleeping mat and Koran, will be sent back to Britain soon, the British government said. Foreign secretary Margaret Beckett said yesterday that Bisher al-Rawi would be returned shortly. He was a long-time resident of Britain but not a citizen before his arrest in late 2002. - (Reuters)

ABUJA- Nigeria's landmark elections will go ahead as scheduled on April 14th and 21st despite the death yesterday of a presidential candidate, a spokesman for the Independent National Electoral Commission said.

"The elections will still hold as scheduled," said Segun Adeogun after news emerged of the death of Alliance for Democracy candidate Adebayo Adefarati. - (Reuters)

'Supercasino' plan is voted down

LONDON- Prospects for Britain's first Las Vegas- style "supercasino" have dimmed after lawmakers rejected government plans.

Senior politicians led by church leaders in Britain's unelected second chamber on Wednesday voted down proposals for a supercasino and 16 other large gambling venues. - (Reuters)

LONDON- Britain's Prince William's girlfriend, Kate Middleton, last night made a formal complaint over alleged press harassment.

Palestinians eye Eurovision glory

RAMALLAH- Palestinians launched a campaign yesterday to enter next year's Eurovision song contest, hoping to go head to head with contestants from states including Israel.

Palestinian officials said preparations were under way to try to qualify for the contest. They said President Mahmoud Abbas supported the effort. - (Reuters)
