Man ordered to honour land deal

A businessman has been ordered by the High Court to honour a contract to buy for €10.7 million lands at Tullow, Co Carlow. Mr Justice Peter Charleton also ordered Declan O’Shea, Ballyknockon, Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow to pay interest of €585,237 relating to the contract which, it was alleged, was required to have been completed on June 27th, 2008.

Damien Higgins had sought the orders against Mr O’Shea on behalf of two businessmen, Paul Joyce, Bowood House, Turnerstown, Athy, Co Kildare, and Liam Larkin, The Square, Listowel, Co Kerry. Mr Joyce also sued on behalf of his daughter Susan.

It was claimed Mr O’Shea had agreed to purchase the 15 acres of lands at Tullow for a price of €10,734,356. A deposit of €536,717.80 was payable under the contract but Mr O’Shea paid €100,000 as a deposit which was accepted by the plaintiffs, it was claimed.

Charged with running brothel

Three Brazilian women appeared in Limerick District Court last night charged with running a brothel in the city. They were arrested by gardaí at 3pm yesterday following a raid on an apartment in the Clancy Strand area.

Insp Séamus Gallagher told the court inquiries were at an initial stage into a bank account belonging to one defendant and asked that the case be adjourned.

Det Sgt Eamon O’Neill gave evidence of arresting Maria Garcia Da Silva,(40), who is charged with keeping a brothel at Castlecourt Apartments, Clancy Strand on January 12th. Ana Christina Dos Santos (31) and Joiceline Costas Dos Santos (32) are charged with assisting in the management of a brothel at the same address on the same date.

The women were remanded in custody until tomorrow.

Man accused of sexual abuse

The trial of a Dublin man accused of sexually abusing a young girl in the city 20 years ago has opened at the Central Criminal Court.The 58-year-old accused has pleaded not guilty to three counts of raping and eight counts of sexually assaulting the girl while she was aged between six and 11 years, on dates between September 1983 to February 1989.

The trial continues before Mr Justice Daniel Herbert and a jury.

Jury sworn in for murder trial

A jury has been sworn in for the trial of a Dublin man accused of murder. Brian Rattigan (28), Cooley Road, Drimnagh, Dublin, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Declan Gavin (20) at Crumlin Road on August 25th 2001. The trial will begin today and is likely to take up to six weeks.
