Man charged with murder of forklift driver

A man has been charged with the murder of an Estonian forklift operator who died after being beaten in a lay-by near Dublin Airport almost two years ago.

Valeri Ranert (28) died at Beaumont Hospital from injuries sustained when he was pulled from his car and assaulted by a number of men at Naul Road near Swords on April 30th, 2007.

Ian Daly (26) Moateview Ave, Priorswood, Dublin, was charged with his murder at Swords District Court. He was remanded in custody to Cloverhill prison to appear before Cloverhill District Court on Tuesday.

Mr Ranert was with a female friend at the time of the attack. Gardaí believe it began as an attempt to steal his mobile phone.

Talks to begin at Tara Mines

Unions and management at Tara Mines have agreed to enter negotiations to try and save some 670 jobs. The agreement followed meetings between the parties at Navan, Co Meath, yesterday.

Workers were placed on protective notice on Monday. Unless cost-cutting measures are agreed by January 19th the zinc mine will be placed on care and maintenance.

The parties are due to meet this morning. It is understood that the introduction of continuous shift patterns and the union's efficiency proposals will be considered.

Company director faces extradition

The managing director of a number of companies in Hungary has been remanded in custody by the High Court facing extradition on foot of a European Arrest Warrant for alleged fraud.

Sgt James Kirwan of the Garda Extradition Unit told Mr Justice John Edwards that Zoltan Batori, Hengersor, Hungary, faced charges in connection with the fraudulent conversion of HUF14 billion, the equivalent of €52 million.

Mr Batori was remanded in custody to next Wednesday.

UVF member charged in killing

Leading north Belfast UVF member Mark Haddock was formally charged with the murder of senior UDA figure Tommy English who was shot dead in front of his wife and children in October 2000 during the UDA-UVF feud of that period.

Haddock, who is currently serving out a 10-year prison sentence at Maghaberry, was formally charged after he was questioned by the Historical Enquiries Team (HET) at Antrim PSNI station yesterday.

The HET was established to deal with over 3,000 so-called cold cases of the troubles up to 1998.

Haddock is nearing the end of a sentence for seriously assaulting a Belfast doorman. He survived a murder attempt by fellow loyalists in 2006.

Gardaí appeal for crash witnesses

Gardaí in Kells, Co Meath, are appealing for witnesses to a fatal single-vehicle crash on the Oldcastle to Loughcrew road at 10.30pm on Monday. The sole occupant of the car, 17-year-old Dean Walshe, Fennor, Oldcastle, died as a result of injuries.

Gardaí ask anybody in the area at the time to contact Kells Garda station on 046-9280820 or the Garda confidential line 1800-666111.

Meanwhile the woman killed when she was knocked down by a car in Co Galway on Monday evening has been named. Kathleen Murray (85) The Square, Ballygar, was walking when the incident happened in Ballygar.

Boy charged with friend's stabbing

A Limerick teenager is alleged to have stabbed his best friend after he found him in bed with his mother, a court heard yesterday.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, is charged with assault causing serious harm to another 17-year-old and with producing a knife at a house in Limerick city on January 6th.
