Crash victim had no helmet, inquest told

An 18-year-old girl who died after falling from a dirt bike was not wearing a crash helmet on the night of her death, an inquest has heard.

Lisa Roche from Rathkeale, Co Limerick, died after falling from a dirt bike in a field at Milltown, Askeaton, on the evening of April 16th last.

Dr Peter Falls told the court Ms Roche had fallen to the ground and never regained consciousness. He said the cause of death was acute head injury.

The jury recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Jailed for raid on shop in Belfast

A robber who tied up a Belfast shop assistant before he and another man made off with €8,820 worth of clothes was jailed for 30 months yesterday.

Sentencing Liam McAnoy (26), of Prospect Park, Lisburn, to a further year on probation, Judge Norman Lockie said it was clear their "vulnerable target" had been subjected to a "threatening and frightening experience".

Phone-in prisoner denies charges

Alan Bradley, whose call to a radio show helped expose how prison inmates had easy access to mobile phones, yesterday denied endangering children's lives in an alleged dangerous driving incident.

Bradley (33) yesterday pleaded not guilty to recklessly endangering lives at Cappagh Road, Finglas, Dublin, on June 5th last.

He also denied two charges of dangerous driving and four related to insurance and licence documents.

The case was adjourned to June 13th.

Protests highlight situation in Biafra

Members of the Biafra Solidarity Network held protests in parts of Dublin to highlight its campaign to secure independence from Nigeria.

Protesters say the international community is not paying enough attention to what it says are widespread human rights abuses against independence activists in the southeast of Nigeria.

New aircraft for Aer Arann

Aer Arann showcased the first of its new fleet of 72-seater turboprop aircraft at Kerry Airport yesterday.

The French-built ATR 72-500 is the first of a fleet of 10 aircraft in a €180 million investment by the fast-growing airline.
