Boy (3) hit by truck has fractured skull

A three-year-old boy and his mother were hit by a truck in Co Offaly yesterday when the child ran out on to the road and was pursued by his mother, according to gardaí.

The 28-year-old woman's injuries were minor but her son was last night taken from Tullamore Regional Hospital to Dublin's Beaumont neurosurgery centre.

Gardaí at Tullamore said the boy sustained a fractured skull and his condition was serious.

The accident took place on the Arden Road in Tullamore just after 4pm.

K Club agrees to 50% staff pay rise

The K Club in Straffan, Co Kildare yesterday agreed to pay greenkeepers and gardening staff a 50 per cent wage increase over the next 18 months as recommended by the Labour Court.

The agreement brings to an end a wage dispute that has been going on since January. It will result in phased pay increases dating back to April 1st this year and continuing to January 2008, which will bring hourly pay rates up from €9.87 to €14.50.

Talks on anti-social behaviour go 'well'

A preliminary meeting to address the issue of anti-social behaviour on the Millennium boardwalk and other areas of Dublin city centre was held yesterday.

Dublin City Council met the Garda and service providers working with the homeless and people affected by drug addiction.

Participants said the meeting went "very well".

Woman injured by armed robbers

A female worker was injured in an attempted armed robbery at a shop in Balbriggan, Co Dublin yesterday.

The woman suffered minor facial injuries after two men fired several shots while attempting to enter Dunnes Stores at the Castlemill Shopping Centre.

The incident happened at about 7.30am, as staff were loading cash into an ATM.

Mayo fire treated as 'suspicious'

A fire which led to the temporary evacuation of about 20 residents from an apartment block in Castlebar, Co Mayo early yesterday is being treated by gardaí as "suspicious".

Residents of the Tara Court apartment building at Ballinrobe Road were evacuated by firemen around 5am after flames were spotted pouring from a pipe which connected a number of exterior large gas cylinders in the ground floor area with the interior of the building.
