€300,000awardedto workers
Mushroom pickers were yesterday awarded over €300,000 after they were dismissed for being members of a trade union.
Siptu said the Employment Appeals Tribunal found in favour of 13 pickers from Lithuania and Latvia, awarding them compensation of €26,000 each.
The pickers were found to have been dismissed for membership of a trade union, which the tribunal deemed unfair.
The awards, made against a Northern-based businessman who was operating a mushroom farm in Co Cavan, also related to minimum notice, annual leave and pay for public holidays. - (PA)
Tributes paid to leading fisherman
Tributes were paid last night to Kevin McHugh (60), leading Donegal fisherman and owner of the Atlantic Dawn supertrawler, who has died at a Dublin hospital after a short illness, writes Lorna Siggins, Marine Correspondent.
Minister of State for Transport Pat the Cope Gallagher expressed "deep regret at the sad and untimely death of a leading fisherman and businessman". Bord Iascaigh Mhara chief executive Pat Keogh described Mr McHugh as a "man with vision". Killybegs Fishermen's Organisation chief executive Seán O'Donoghue said Mr McHugh had "always pushed the boat out".
Search to resume for sea angler
A search is due to resume today off the north Clare coast for a Polish sea angler who was swept out to sea off rocks on Sunday.
Bad weather hampered searches yesterday for Piotr Bedzlowicz (35) but a cliff-line search was carried out yesterday afternoon.
