Man arrested in Tyrone over sexual assault
Police in Strabane, Co Tyrone, said yesterday a man had been arrested and is helping them with their inquiries into "a very serious sexual assault on a young woman".
The attack took place close to the town centre in the early hours of yesterday morning when the woman, in her 20s, was assaulted as she walked past Porter's Factory on the Derry Road.
"She had just left a local nightclub when she was assaulted and she has been deeply traumatised by what has happened to her," a PSNI spokesman said.
Legal argument in trial of nurse
The trial of a nurse accused of poisoning two elderly patients has continued in legal argument in the absence of the jury.
Noreen Mulholland (35), now living in Park Road, Portadown, Co Armagh, and previously of Runabeg Close, Kildare, has pleaded not guilty to assault causing harm to John Gethings (77), of Baltinglass, Co Wicklow on March 1st, 2003 and Séamus Doherty (80), Rathcoffey, Naas, Co Kildare, between June 18th and 19th, 2003.
She also denies intentionally or recklessly administering a substance, Serenase, to both men, knowing it was capable of interfering with their bodily functions without their consent on the same dates.
The trial is expected to resume today.
Man in hospital following stabbing
A man in his 20s was recovering in hospital in Limerick yesterday following a stabbing at a house in the city. The victim was injured after a row broke out between two men in a house in Castletroy View at around 9pm on Sunday.
He was taken by ambulance to the Mid Western Regional Hospital, where his injuries were described as not life threatening. Gardaí are believed to have interviewed both men yesterday and an investigation is underway.
Suspended term for providing knife
The uncle of a man jailed for seven years for the fatal stabbing of a teenage father during a street brawl in Tallaght has been given a two-year suspended sentence for providing a knife in relation to the fatal incident.
Stephen Warner brought a meat cleaver and a kitchen knife to his sister's home after a row broke out on her street in which her sons were involved. He gave the knife to one of his nephews, who then stabbed 17-year-old Jamie Keogh.
Warner (40) of Donamore Avenue, Tallaght, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to production of an article for an unlawful purpose on July 30th, 2004.
Publican challenges order to close bar
A Co Cork publican who admitted having underage persons on her premises at a charity fundraiser for the victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster has brought a High Court challenge to overturn a District Court order that the bar be shut for more than two months.
Publican Mary O'Shea, of Bishopsisland, Watergrasshill, Co Cork, yesterday secured leave from Justice Michael Hanna to seek judicial review of the order made at Midleton District Court by Judge Michael Pattwell.
Ms O'Shea wants the High Court to quash Judge Pattwell's order that her premises - the Sportsman's Inn, Mogeely, Midleton - be closed for 67 days.
Memorial mass for French woman
A memorial Mass was held in Limerick yesterday for a 31-year-old French woman killed in an accident last week.
Nadia Lescuer was cycling home from work last Wednesday when she was struck at the entrance to a construction site beside the Castletroy Park Hotel in Limerick.
