Waterford fire accidental, tests reveal
Gardaí in Waterford have confirmed that preliminary forensic examinations of the scene of a fire in which two adults and an infant died, have revealed that it started accidentally.
Brian O'Regan (32) and Johanna O'Regan (32), with their 18-month-old daughter, Niamh, died in the early hours of Monday morning following a fire at their home in the Ballybeg housing estate in the city.
Members of the Garda Technical Bureau completed forensic investigations at the scene yesterday afternoon.
Preliminary results of examinations by deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis proved that all three deceased died from smoke and fire gas inhalation.
Cian (10), Briana (7) and Aaron (5) escaped from the semi-detached house in Ardmore Terrace. They were taken to Waterford Regional Hospital but later released into the care of their paternal grandparents.
Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on 051 305300. A Tramore woman has organised a fund account for the surviving O'Regan children. The removal of the victims will take place tonight to St Saviour's church, Ballybeg, at 7.30pm. The funeral Mass takes place tomorrow.
