Charges follow Nenagh armed robbery

A man has appeared at a special sitting of Nenagh District Court where he was charged in relation to an armed robbery on a betting shop in the town on Saturday.

Xuefeng Bai (24), of no fixed abode, was charged with robbery and possession of a firearm at Ladbrokes betting shop in Silver Street, Nenagh.

Judge Michael Reilly remanded the accused in custody to appear at Nenagh District Court on Friday.

The accused is alleged to have entered the betting shop just after it opened at about 10am, where he brandished a revolver and threatened staff before making off with a sum of money.

A struggle ensued before gardaí arrested the man, who was found to be in possession of a hand gun, a knife and a sum of money. He was detained at the local Garda station under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Limerick gardaí say man drowned

Gardaí in Limerick say they are no longer investigating the death of a man whose body was found in a river in Limerick at the weekend.

The man in his 20s was recovered from the Abbey river near Athlunkard Bridge by members of Limerick Marine Search and Rescue early on Saturday.

Initially gardaí said they were keeping an "open mind" as they believed he may have suffered head injuries.

A postmortem examination carried out at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick later revealed that drowning was the cause of death.

Man dies from ladder fall

A man has died from head injuries he incurred on Saturday afternoon after falling off a ladder on his farm in Ballyregan, Cloyne, Co Cork.

Seán Kenneally (64), a single man, was brought by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he died a few hours later.

He is survived by brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.

Man dies in house fire in Waterford

A man in his 20s has died in a house fire in Ferrybank just outside Waterford city.

His body was discovered on Saturday afternoon after emergency services were called to the house at Willow Drive on the Belfield Estate. A forensic examination was carried out and the fire is thought to have occurred overnight.
