Louth County Council has confirmed that it is issuing a legal notice against the owner of lands adjacent to Baltray Golf Club where illegal dumping has been taking place for some time.

The course has been chosen as the venue for next year's Irish Open and is expected to attract around 77,000 spectators.

Burnt-out fridges, washing machines, bedsprings and drink cans are littered around a number of dunes close to the course. Yesterday the council confirmed it has already prosecuted a number of people under the Litter Act for dumping bags of household rubbish close to the links course.

The land in question is reached by what appears to be a public road. The council says it is not a public road, but there are no barriers or gates to suggest this, and the council acknowledges that it is used by the public regularly.

The road ends at the Boyne river and runs alongside the southernmost tip of the golf course, although the dumping is not visible from the course.

Yesterday the environment section of the council confirmed it was aware of the dumping and visits the area on a regular basis. It has erected "No dumping" signs, but these appear to have been taken down by those carrying out the dumping.

Yesterday the council said it is to issue a legal notice under the Waste Management Act on the landowner, directing him to remove all the waste.
