The US owned Howmedica International, based in Limerick, announced yesterday that it was to lay off 54 of its workforce.
The lay offs at the Industrial Estate plant, ing to management, are "part of the company's ongoing strategy to consolidate its as a world class of orthopaedic devices".
A combination of voluntary redundancy and voluntary early retirement will achieve the 13 per cent reduction of the workforce.
