The chief executive of the Mater Hospital in Dublin issued an appeal for extra nurses to head off a "crisis" in his accident and emergency department.

Mr Martin Cowley said last night that the problem had been generated by a shortage of nursing staff and record numbers of people turning up at casualty departments during the Christmas holiday. He said staff were under unprecedented pressure and that "the position has reached crisis point over the past few days."
