A British army bomb disposal team have removed an hoax bomb from the house of an SDLP councillor in Derry.

Mr Billy Leonard was woken when two paint bombs were thrown at his house in High Road, Portstewart, shortly before 1 a.m.

A black bag containing a tin box was outside his front door. A battery, timer and pipe were found inside the box, but they were not connected.

The army bomb disposal team examined the device and declared it an "elaborate hoax".

Mr Leonard said the activity had "nothing whatsoever to do with democracy," adding: The people who come in the dark of night and attack a family home have nothing to offer".
