Dr Christian Barnard, one of the many pioneers of heart transplant surgery.
What other career might you have chosen?
Music.
If you could grant three wishes for the health service, what would they be?
The necessary resources (human or capital) to deliver timely, effective and dignified hospital care for all.
What is your greatest fear?
Being buried before I'm actually dead.
Have you ever been a patient and were you a good one?
Yes. I was best described as an impatient patient.
When or where are you happiest?
Playing saxophone with friends in the Barrack Street Concert Band.
How do you cope with stress?
Usually by turning up the radio, relaxing and watching other drivers having hissy fits.
What is the trait you most admire in yourself?
Perseverance, tinged with a bit of humour.
What is the trait you most dislike in yourself?
Not rehearsing music as much as I should.

Thankfully I'm enjoying good health but I would rule nothing out regarding alternatives.

The lads in the band and Kathleen, of course.
What is your motto?
Live and let live - there's precious little time.

I barely get to see the TV but when I do I enjoy The Sopranos and Malcolm in The Middle. I enjoy Morning Ireland and the Last Word on the radio.
What books would you bring to a desert island?
Any good boat-building book. There is no point wasting time alone on an island, there's too much living to be done.
