Ghosts descend on Cork City Gaol as festivals around Ireland celebrate Halloween

World Ghost Convention: The 15th World Ghost Convention takes place in Cork city gaol heritage centre on Friday.

The convention features discussions about supernatural topics by a panel of international guest speakers from different backgrounds. People who have experienced supernatural occurrences have the chance to share their experiences if they wish. The gaol itself is also supposed to be haunted.

Portlaw Pumpkin Festival: The festival takes place in Clodiagh House in Portlaw Co Waterford this weekend. It features a line-up of writers, illustrators and animators who will share tips, tricks and treats on how to generate ideas for short stories and novels, as well as perfecting your drawing skills.

Author of The Borrowed Dark: Are you afraid of being buried alive? Dave Rudden and Matt Griffin, author of A Cage of Roots will be at the festival.

Spleodar Festival: Spleodar is a family focused arts festival taking place inNenagh Co Tipperary this weekend. The festival features concerts, exhibitions, theatre, films and a mix of workshops children. There's also a fireworks display in Nenagh town on Hallowe'en night for all the family.

Dragon of Shandon Festival: The Dragon of Shandon will return to walk amongst the people of Cork this Halloween on Sunday night. One of Ireland's largest night-time parades, this event features hundreds of costumed performers accompanying a 36-foot dragon made entirely of tape . Celebrating its 10th birthday this year The Dragon of Shandon Parade will extend its route and enter the city centre for the first time to roam the city streets.

Halloween Festival Westport House: The Halloween festival takes place in Westport House Co Mayo from 11 am to 5pm every day until Sunday

Activities for children include the “wily white witch’s spirited story time”, musical statues at the daily kiddies’ disco and Spooky Spoons cookery workshop. Back by popular demand is the ‘Thriller’ dance workshop, where children can learn all the moves from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” music video in the Large Dining Room of Westport House.

Hugh O' Flaherty Memorial Weekend: The memorial weekend takes place in Killarney, Co Kerry this weekend to commemorate Killarney native, Msgr Hugh O'Flaherty. He was tasked by the Vatican to monitor the welfare of prisoners in the fascist controlled POW camps around Rome during the first three years of WWII.

In his honour, the Hugh O’ Flaherty International Humanitarian Award will be presented to a worthy recipient.The programme includes the humanitarian award ceremony; film and documentary screenings; a photo and memorabilia exhibition, heritage tours. All events are free.
