A member of An Garda Síochána was yesterday remanded on bail of €2,000 charged with two counts of assault against his former partner.

Brian McSharry (37), Benroe, Bruckless, Co Donegal, was arrested in Killybegs at 2.30am last Thursday after reports were received of a disturbance at a house in Emerald Drive. Mr McSharry's former partner, with whom he has a three-year-old daughter, was removed to Sligo General Hospital following the incident. Her condition was yesterday described as stable.

Mr McSharry, who has been suspended from the force since his arrest, had been working in Buncrana Garda station having been transferred there from Killybegs. He was previously suspended from the force in November 2005 when he was charged with assault against the same woman. Those charges were subsequently withdrawn.

Originally from Teesan, Sligo, he was charged under Sections 2 and 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act in Glenties District Court.
