From `the Last Supper' to Sotheby's

On Tuesday night two art exhibitions took place, one celebrating the old and one heralding the new. At Norman Hewson's restaurant Tosca, young Dublin artist David Begley moved among the crowds at the opening of his third solo exhibition.

Rather appropriately, given the restaurant setting, the exhibition is titled "The Last Supper". Having recently completed a large mural for the Hot Press Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, Begley is currently working on an exhibition in Belgium later this year.

Among those enjoying both the art and the artistic pink cocktails were Jean Butler, chatting away to Richard Boyle and HP's Niall Stokes, who opened the event; Joseph O'Gorman, secretary of the Trinity Ball, taking time out from the pre-Ball schedule; artist Mick O'Dea and DJ Tonie Walshe.

Across town, the Molesworth Gallery was flooded with evening sunlight as Sotheby's hosted a preview of its prestigious Irish sale. Having previously travelled through the US and Canada, the exhibition makes but a brief stop in Dublin before travelling to London for the sale on May 21st. Patrick Guinness and Anne Dillon, who organised the evening, welcomed guests who included Sotheby's director Hugo Swire; art dealer John Heather and William Montgomery who had travelled down from Derry for the event.

The Molesworth Gallery has recently been acquired by Teresa Crowley, former journalist Ronan Lyons and Malcolm Alexander and this was their christening exhibition. A host of other exhibitions are planned for later in the year.
