IRELAND:A former Russian prime minister was last night being treated in a Dublin hospital after he became ill during a conference at NUI Maynooth yesterday afternoon.

Dr Yegor Gaidar fell ill at the conference at approximately 5.15pm yesterday. Russian embassy sources said Mr Gaidar is diabetic and it is thought his illness is related to his condition.

It is understood that he had earlier told delegates at the two-day conference that he was feeling unwell, and had absented himself from a question and answer session yesterday afternoon.

However, he later returned to discuss his recent book, Downfall of the Empire: Lessons for Contemporary Russia, when he absented himself once more. Some reports suggested that he was bleeding from his nose.
