Food authority closes 3 premises for breaches

A Halal grocery on Dublin's Camden Street and a café in Killybegs, Co Donegal, were shut down by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland last month.

The Camden Halal shop and Melly's Café on Main Street, Killybegs were issued with the closure orders, which are served when it where it is deemed that "there is, or there is likely to be, a grave and immediate danger to public health at or in the premises".

A premises at Creeve, Clontibret, Co Monaghan was also issued with a closure order. This business, owned by Valdas Simkus, was also issued with a Prohibition Order. Mr Simkus was ordered to remove all meat products from the premises over health breaches.

A Prohibition Order is issued if the business in involved in practices that are likely to involve a serious risk to public health from a particular product, class, batch or item of food. The business is prohibited from selling the product, either temporarily or permanently.

A total of 12 Enforcement Orders - seven Closure Orders, one Improvement Order and four Prohibition Orders - have been served so far this year, the FSAI said. Last month saw the highest number of orders since April 2004.
