Five people have been killed in separate traffic accidents over the weekend.This follows three other traffic deaths in Galway on Friday.

The deaths bring to 43, the number of people killed on the roads so far this year. This figure is similar for the same period last year, according to gardaí.

In Donegal, 29-year-old Mr Oliver McElhinney, from Carndonagh, died on Saturday morning at Moville, after a car crashed into a bridge.

Three others in the car were taken to Altnagalvin Hospital in Derry.

Gardaí are also investigating the death of man following a fatal crash at Mellows Road, Finglas, Dublin, at around mid-day yesterday.

The 66-year-old man, who was driving a moped, was fatally injured after being hit by a car.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at James Connolly Memorial hospital.

A man was also killed on the Ennistymon to Lisdoonvarna road in Co Clare on Saturday evening.

He was lying on the road when hit by a car.

Another man died last night following an accident near Crusheen, Co Clare, yesterday. Also yesterday Mr Isadore Lynch (55), from Beal and Daingean, Co Galway, was killed when he lost control of the car he was driving.

Five others were injured in the accident yesterday morning when two cars were involved in the head-on collision on the main Ennis to Gort road.

Figures released last month showed the number of people killed on Irish roads in 2003 was the lowest in 40 years.

According to the Department of Transport figures, 341 people were killed last year.

The Minister for Transport, Mr Brennan, said he intends to intensify the Government's road safety campaign this year.
