A file on the latest criminal investigation into illegal dumping in Wicklow has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Gardaí from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation have carried out an extensive investigation into an unauthorised dump at Killegar in Enniskerry, which is believed to contain tens of thousands of commercial and domestic waste.

Some of the rubbish came from restaurants and businesses in Dublin city centre, but there were thousands of tonnes of construction and demolition material dumped at the Killegar site. Much of the activity took place in the last 10 years.

The investigation by the bureau began in September last year.

The Killegar file is the latest to have been sent to the DPP as part of a three-year investigation into illegal dumping in Co Wicklow.

Eleven people are due before the courts on criminal charges in relation to three different dump sites in the west of the county.

These include Whitestown and Coolnamadra near Baltinglass, and the Dillonstown site, owned by Roadstone, near Blessington.
