A former British soldier who stabbed and killed a former loyalist paramilitary leader over a drug debt was jailed for seven years today.

Lindsay Robb (38), a one-time commander of the outlawed Ulster Volunteer Force, died following a struggle with Brian Tollett in Glasgow on December 31st last year. Tollett was found guilty of culpable homicide over the attack on the 38-year-old.

Robb settled in Lanarkshire after being released from prison in the North in 1999 under the terms of the Belfast Agreement. He was convicted four years earlier for his part in a loyalist gun-running operation.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that Tollett (29), a former member of the Royal Fusiliers, got into a fight with him over a £140 drug debt.

The attack was witnessed by passers-by on Gartloch Road in the city's Ruchazie area.

Judge Lord Brailsford said it was not unprovoked and that the fatal blow was inflicted as part of a "mutual struggle".

Sentencing Tollett today, the judge said he had also taken into account the killer's psychological problems as a result of his service in the Balkans.

The sentence was met with shouts and tears from Robb's family and friends who were gathered at the court. They shouted "scum" and "murderer" as Tollett was led away.
