The European Union has decided to postpone a decision to retaliate against US steel tariffs until Sept 30, said EU director-general of trade Mr Peter Carl.

"We from the commission side welcome the cooperation that our American colleagues have been showing on this matter," Mr Carl told reporters in Brussels and Washington via a teleconference referring to 261 exclusions announced by the Bush administration.

Earlier today, the US announced 14 new exemptions which Mr Carl said amounted to €60 million putting the total exemptions of EU exports at around €290 million.

The EU had threatened retaliation of up to $380 million.
