Brussels - Almost one in three marriages in the European Union will end in divorce if current trends continue - a record high, according to a report published yesterday.

Europeans are also marrying less, the EU statistics agency, Eurostat, said. The EU divorce rate has climbed steadily from 11 per cent of marriages in 1970 to about 30 per cent in 1995, Eurostat said in a statement.

Belgium and Sweden are the most divorce-prone countries, with more than half of their marriages likely to split up, according to 1995 figures, Eurostat said.
