The European Commission has agreed to donate €55 million euros to support United Nations relief aid for Palestinian refugees.

"The objective is to support education, health, relief and social services programmes," the European Union's executive arm said, announcing the donation to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

The Commission said the money also took account of higher costs incurred by UNRWA in trying to get aid through Israel's blockade of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

European officials have repeatedly urged Israel to stop their alleged harassment of foreign aid workers attempting to help the Palestinians.

The latest donation forms part of a €237-million package announced by the EU in September to fund the cash-strapped UN agency for the next four years.
