A Mandate official, Mr John Donnelly, said employers were using legal devices to deny their moral obligations to long serving employees. He said that recently over 20 Mandate members in Dodds Sales Ltd, in Mary Street, Dublin had been made redundant with only statutory entitlements after the company went into liquidation.

Up to two years ago these workers had been employed by Dedds the parent company, which had then transferred to its subsidiary.

When it later closed, the parent company had assets of over £1 million. "The directors were able to walk away from this fiasco," he said.
