A shoddily built Illinois school has been closed since April because it is filled with a potentially toxic mould. The mould at St Charles East High School is the result of moisture leaking into the building via walls, windows and roof.

The problem has led to calls last week for legislation to provide expert advice from local authorities to school boards in relation to construction, so that cost and design issues can be reviewed in an informed way.
