THE University of Limerick conspicuously failed to follow the example set by TCD recently and refused to let an RTC hammer them into submission in the latest round of Challenging Times, the Irish Times/ RTE quiz for third level colleges.

The UL team of Michael Quilligan, Ciaran Madden, Raymond Lannon and sub Paul Hannon defeated the Galway RTC team of Syd Smith, Adrian McNulty, Dan McSweeney and sub Donal Casserly by 185 points to 95.

It was lucky for the UL team that they did perform well, for, had they repeated TCD's abysmal performance against Waterford RTC last week, UL supremo Dr Ed Walsh would have had them all put against a wall and shot.

This week UCD face Tralee RTC in the last first round heat. Challenging Times is transmitted each Wednesday evening on RTE 1 at 8.30 p.m.
