How can we develop a more egalitarian society? Should we even be trying to do so? There's a chance to look for the answers to these and other questions at a one-day conference to be held in UCD on December 15th.

The organisers of the conference say the issues to be examined are of particular relevance for a number of reasons. They cite among the reasons the consequences of political changes both in the Republic and in Northern Ireland; increased national prosperity, while large numbers of people still live in poverty; and the difficulties faced by refugees and migrant workers here.

Big names (if that's not too inegalitarian a phrase) addressing the conference include Chris McCrudden, professor of human rights at Lincoln College, Oxford; professor of gender studies at the London School of Economics, Anne Phillips; and Lancaster University's professor of sociology, Andrew Sayer.

The former President, Mary Robinson, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, will give the closing address.
