A number of students will head to Vienna, Graz and Salzburg for a two-week stay shortly following their victory in the recent German Language Essay Competition on Austria. Almost 300 second-level schools took part in the competition, which is organised by the Irish Austrian Society.

The winners in the Junior Cert section were Peter Harrigan, of CBS Highschool, Clonmel, Co Tipperary, and Siobhan McCauley, of Scoil Mhuire, Athy, Co Kildare. The Transition Year winners were Sandra O'Keeffe, Presentation College, Athenry, Co Galway, and Colm Clancy, of Colaiste an Spioraid Naoimh, Cork. The fifth- and sixthyear winners were David Hughes, of Presentation College, Bray, Co Wicklow and Alice Blunden, of Ursuline College, Thurles, Co Tipperary.
