The equality Studies Centre at UCD would welcome enquiries from interested teachers in community schools and colleges and vocational schools who want to get involved in a research project. The research will examine issues relating to gender in maths classes in co-educational and single-sex schools. The project will be funded by the equality committee of the Department of Education and Science.
One part of the study will involve analysis of Junior Cert results in relation to the performance of boys and girls in maths and a number of others subjects over a five-year period. The second part will involve a co-opearative investigation into classroom interaction in maths using video or audio recording for analysis - it will also involve a survey of teachers, students and parents on issues related to maths. The focus will be on the social climate of classrooms, particularly pupil-pupil and pupil-teacher interaction.
