British Prime Minister Gordon Brown should help Orangemen facing insurance crises after their halls were set on fire, the North's First Minister has said.

The Rev Ian Paisley said Mr Brown agreed to consider the matter after they talked yesterday.

Thirty-three halls have been attacked since July, many set on fire, and Orange Grand Master Robert Saulters has branded the arsons an ethnic assault.

DUP leader Mr Paisley said: "This year alone, scores of halls have been attacked by fires instigated by those who seek to wipe out the culture and heritage of the Orange community.

"Such attacks are designed to heighten tension locally and leave communities without facilities. I, along with colleagues, have previously asked the Government to act to alleviate the insurance difficulties faced by the victims of these attacks."

Mr Saulters has said that about 300 Orange Halls had been attacked during the past 30 years and called for extra protection.
