Some of the highest ranking police offices in the world are in Dublin today for a major international conference.

The International Police Association (IPA) is holding its annual meeting in the city to mark the 50th anniversary of the foundation of its Irish branch.

Around 8,000 members of the 12,000-strong Garda Siochána are members of the IPA.

The president of its Irish branch, Joe Lynch said it was an opportunity for police officers around the world to share their expertise.

"We have more than 300 delegates from 61 countries. It opens doors for you in relation to seeing how police operate in different countries," he said.

American police officers account for more than one third of all delegates.

The conference at the Burlington Hotel will be opened by Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy.
