The €2 billion development of 10,000 houses at Adamstown in west Dublin is to take first prize at the Irish Planning Institute's (IPI) National Planning Awards today.

The planning achievement award will be presented jointly to South Dublin County Council and O'Mahony Pike Architects and Urban Designers for their work on the scheme for the new residential community currently under construction near Lucan, Co Dublin.

Top planning awards will also be presented to Dublin City Council and Tralee Town Council by Minister for the Environment Dick Roche at the IPI ceremony today.

Adamstown is the first Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) in the State - an area designated for large-scale residential community development - and the planning scheme was commended by the judging panel as a model for delivering large-scale urban developments.

The planning in conservation award will be presented to Dublin City Council for the Dublin city walls and defences conservation plan. The plan was initiated last year by the council to address concerns relating to the preservation of the remaining wall and future planning issues in the surrounding area.

Tralee Town Council will receive the urban design award for the Tralee pedestrianisation project. The council won the award for its redevelopment of the ancient town square, which had come under threat from an out of town shopping centre.

A €2 million redesign by architects Nicholas de John and Associates, Limerick, was undertaken.
