GAA round-up:Munster football champions Dr Crokes advanced into the semi-finals this afternoon, but not before being pushed all the way by a resurgent Kilmurry/Ibrickane in the second half. Crokes prevailed on a 2-8 to 10-13 scoreline as they almost squandered an eight point lead in Quilty.
An early goal from Colm Cooper got the Kerry champions up and running and although Clare’s Kilmurry/Ibrickane would fight back to level in the first half, Dr Crokes pulled clear again at the start of the second period. Indeed, when Brian Looney notched a second goal for Crokes in the 41st minute, Kilmurry/Ibrickane found themselves 2-7 to 0-5 adrift.
The home side rallied thereafter, restricting Dr Crokes to just one more point in the final 20 minutes and when Ian McInerney pointed late on there was just a single score between the sides. But Dr Crokes rode out the storm in the final few minutes, hanging on to reach the last four where they will meet Clonmel Commercials of Tipperary.
In this afternoon’s other Munster quarter-final, Dromcollogher Broadford proved no match for the Cork’s Castlehaven who hammered the Limerick champions 1-15 to 0-7. Castlehaven failed to make the most of a strong wind in Clonakility in the first half, leading by just 0-7 to 0-4.
However, they pressed home that advantage after the interval and when Shane Nolan’s goal opened a 1-10 to 0-6 the Rebel side were never going to be caught.
In the Leinster hurling championship, a late goal from Sean McGrath was not enough to save Dublin’s Kilmacud Crokes against Oulart-the-Ballagh in Parnell Park. McGrath’s strike five minutes from time brought his side level after they had trailed for much of the contest. The Wexford side were always likely to get one more chance and Nicky Kirwan made no mistake with a 59th minute free to seal the win on a 1-13 to 1-12 scoreline
