The Green Party has described as "indefensible" the detention of singer Youssou N'Dour by immigration officials in Dublin airport last night.

The internationally renowned Senegalese musician was held for three-and-a-half hours, delaying a Dublin concert by one hour.

Green Party Justice spokesperson Mr Ciaran Cuffe said: "The Green Party are calling on the Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, to make a full statement explaining the actions of Immigration officials.

"This case has all the appearances of racial profiling. It is a serious embarrassment and we are calling on the Minister to apologise," Mr Cuffe said.

Mr Cuffe said that the incident highlights the need for "a complete review of the criteria used by immigration officials and the methods used for screening visitors to Ireland".
