Morris tribunal:A Donegal woman wrongly arrested during a murder investigation has said that a detective sergeant who mistreated her in Garda custody was "a compulsive liar".

Róisín McConnell was one of 12 people wrongly arrested during the investigation into the death of Raphoe cattle-dealer Richie Barron, a hit-and-run victim.

Mrs McConnell's complaints that she was mistreated in custody were denied by gardaí until October 2005, when Det Garda John Dooley told the tribunal that the allegations were true.

Former Det Sgt John White also told the tribunal that he "broadly agreed" with Garda Dooley's statement in March 2006.

In a submission read into the record by tribunal barrister Paul McDermott SC, Mrs McConnell said it had been "a long 10 years", and had it not been for Garda Dooley breaking ranks, she would have been called a liar again at the tribunal, as she had been in papers lodged in response to a civil case for wrongful arrest.

She said that Mr White was "a compulsive liar who only tells part truth when he is pushed into a corner". Mrs McConnell said she was not told what had happened to her 18-month-old son after her arrest "in an effort to mentally torture me".

In a submission on his arrest also read into the record, Frank McBrearty snr said that "lives were ruined" and that a false confession was "made up" and attributed to his son, Frank McBrearty jnr.

But Seán Quinn BL, representing several detectives against whom Mr McBrearty made allegations, said Mr McBrearty was "a person who at this time would not hesitate to make irresponsible and false allegations against members of An Garda Síochána".
