Castleknock College says it is outraged at allegations its supporters chanted racist taunts at a black player from Wesley College during a schools rugby match last Saturday.
The allegations were made on RTE's Liveline yesterday by Mr Brian Gray, who was at the match and is father of one of Wesley College's players. He said he was disgusted at the alleged racist chants and taunts from Castleknock supporters.
However, Mr Andrew Mc Geady, headmaster of Castle knock College, told The Irish Times yesterday the allegations were "the greatest heap of nonsense I have ever heard".
"They just didn't happen," he said, adding that the allegations were "so inconceivable they should not have been let on the airwaves." He said there were six staff and at most 50 Castleknock supporters at the match, "and there was no group of people at the match who were unidentifiable by us".
Castleknock was not "a homogenous white school", said Mr McGeady. It has day boys and boarders from overseas, and its rugby team has a number of black players. "That's the irony of it," he said.
The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) says it received a handful of complaints yesterday which it would investigate.
"The allegations were that a coloured player was barracked," said Mr Sandy Heffernan of the Leinster Branch of the IRFU.
The president's office of Wesley College was contacted by The Irish Times yesterday evening, but did not comment.
Mr Gray told Liveline he rang the programme to make sure the Leinster Branch of the IRFU would take action.
The match, a Leinster Schools Senior League semi-final, was played at Bird Avenue, Dublin, finishing Castleknock 8, Wesley 0.
