GARDAI are investigating an allegation of abuse of a nine year, old girl by other residents in a children's hot line in Dublin.

The home is run by a religious order, and children requiring residential care are referred to it by the Eastern Health Board.

It is understood the child suffers from a mild mental handicap and has behavioural problems. She had been in voluntary health board care for three years, and in the residential home for about a year.

Following inquiries from The Irish Times, the management of the children's centre made the following statement "We are extremely concerned at a recent allegation of abuse at the centre.

"It is alleged that the abuse involved a small group of children varying in age from 8 to 14 years. The allegations relate to three boys, and a young girl against whom the abuse is alleged to have occurred.

"We immediately undertook an investigation as the allegations came to our attention in May of this year and that investigation is continuing with other outside agencies. Officers of the Eastern Health Board were also immediately informed and we are fully co-operating with them. The Garda Siochana will have our full co-operation should they consider it appropriate to investigate.

"The parents of the children involved have been notified of the allegations and, in conjunction with the Eastern Health Board, counselling is being arranged for all the children.

"We are reviewing our procedures and will immediately implement any changes that are recommended on the conclusion of the investigation. Our immediate concern at this time is the provision of support, protection and assistance to the children involved."

Local gardai have confirmed they are investigating the allegations.
