US Vice President Dick Cheney, who underwent an urgent procedure yesterday to clear a partially blocked artery, left the hospital this morning to return home for some rest.

Dressed in a dark business suit, Mr Cheney walked out of the entrance of George Washington Medical Center in downtown Washington and got into a limousine without speaking to reporters.

The vice president has had four heart attacks since 1978, and the latest problem was likely to raise anew questions about his fitness to hold high office.
