Two brothers have been jailed for 71/2 years each for a two-day rampage of violence that left a man scarred for life, a dentist's wrist broken in a road-rage attack and £6,000 damage to property.
A 23-year-old man received 77 stitches after an attack by the brothers and a group of other men.
The assault was so frenzied that one of the brothers received serious cuts from a Stanley knife used by another attacker. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court also heard the dentist was out of work for two months and £5,000 worth of damage was done to his car. A total of £1,000 worth of damage was caused to the windows of a house in Clondalkin.
The brothers, Alan (20) and David Maloney (22), of Forrest Drive, Kingswood Heights, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to assault causing serious harm and to causing criminal damage on November 28th and November 30th, 1997.
Garda Eddie McBride told prosecuting counsel Mr Des Zaiden that the dentist, Mr James Walsh (50), was travelling to his daily clinic in Clondalkin on November 28th, 1997, when a white van swerved close to his car. The white van pulled up nearby, and Alan Maloney broke Mr Walsh's wrist with pliers before chasing him into a shop. Mr Walsh tried to defend himself with a sweeping brush but received a cut to the chest from a screwdriver. As the attack continued, the other man set upon his car, causing £5,000 worth of damage.
At about 8.30 p.m. on the same day, the Maloneys and four other men attacked a house in Monastery Walk, Clondalkin, apparently because one of the occupants had insulted a friend of theirs. David Maloney kicked in the door and the attackers smashed nearly all the front windows of the house, causing £1,000 worth of damage.
Two days later the Maloneys were among a gang of six men who attacked Mr Keith McDonnell (23) at his home at Riversdale Crescent, Clondalkin. Mr McDonnell received 70 stitches in a leg and seven in his head and lost four of his front teeth.
