Ulster runner Paul Brizzel has failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the mens 200m at the World Championships at the Stade de France this evening.

The Ballymena man came in fifth with a time of 20.56 seconds, behind heat winner and US runner John Capel (20.30 seconds), Britain's Darren Campbell (20.35 seconds) and Namibia's Frankie Fredericks (20.49 seconds).

Poland's Marcin Jedrusinski claimed the remaining semi-final place.

His race time now ensures that the Irishman has achieved a qualifying time good enough to gain entry to next year's Olympic Games in Athens.

Brizzell qualified for the race after running a 20.75 second fastest loser run in his heat in Paris this morning.
